The Church of the Good Shepherd is located in Pitman, New
Jersey, a small town with a stable population of 10,000 that covers 2.35 square
miles. Pitman, 17 miles southeast of Philadelphia, is located in a combined
metropolitan and rural area known as the Delaware Valley. There is easy access
by car, bus, or train (from Philadelphia) to other major metropolitan areas in
the northeast corridor--New York City (95 miles), Baltimore (115 miles),
Washington D. C. (145 miles) and Wilmington (35 miles).
The parish draws from basically three communities in
Gloucester county: Pitman, Glassboro, and Washington Township. Washington
Township is the largest of the three, both in area and population. It is a fast
growing bedroom community with a younger median age and higher income profile
than the other two communities. Glassboro is much smaller than Washington
Township and is the most diverse of the three communities. It is the home of
Rowan University which provides cultural as well as educational opportunities.
Pitman has more churches of varying denominations per capita than most towns its
size, providing the town with its strong religious background. The Delaware
Valley is rich in cultural and recreational attractions. Higher education is one
of the strengths of the Delaware Valley. There are 40 colleges offering
four-year degrees and 18 colleges offering two-year degrees within an hour’s
drive.
The Jersey shore is one hour away, with
beaches, boating, fishing, and year-round entertainment -- especially in
Atlantic City.
The Pocono Mountains are two hours away
with lakes, woods and ski resorts.
Two large state parks are within an
hour's drive.
Professional and college athletic teams
play in Philadelphia and its suburbs.
The Philadelphia Academy of Music is
the home of the Philadelphia Orchestra and hosts two opera companies and the
Pennsylvania Ballet.
There are five major theatres in the
Philadelphia area.
Camden "E Center"
Entertainment Center is available for cultural events.
New Jersey State Aquarium in Camden is
located near the Delaware River.
A wide range of museums and galleries
include the Franklin Institute of Science, the Rodin and Norman Rockwell
Museums, The University of Pennsylvania Museum, and the Philadelphia Museum of
Art -- to name just a few.
World-famous Longwood Gardens and
America's oldest formal garden, Morris Arboretum, await the gardening enthusiast
(Route 1, Kennet Square, PA.)
